These regional summaries were provided by the six Regional Climate Centers and reflect conditions in their respective regions. Drought extent contracted across the Carolinas, Virginia and northern Plains. Drought severity lessened across the northern Rockies and throughout much of the West. Drought conditions expanded or intensified across much of the central and southern Plains and Lower Mississippi River Valley. was in drought, similar to the extent of drought near the beginning of December. Drought Monitor report, approximately 55 percent of the contiguous U.S. Precipitation was below average across much of the central and southern Plains, Midwest, Lower Mississippi Valley and along much of the East Coast. Minnesota ranked second wettest for December.
Temperatures were below average across portions of the Northwest and northern Rockies. Above-average overnight temperatures were observed across much of the Lower 48 with record warm temperatures in place across the Deep South and parts of the Lower Mississippi River Valley. Oklahoma bested their 1933 record by 5.3☏. Texas shattered their previous warmest December set in 1933 by 5.7☏. The most anomalous of the record heat observed during December was centered across the south-central U.S.Temperatures were below average across portions of the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies. 10 states ranked record warmest and an additional 21 states from the Rockies to the East Coast ranked among their top-five Decembers.
